AFRICAN IMMIGRANTS DON'T BACKDOWN FOR ANYBODY
A typical African immigrant does not have any kind of
victim mentality or inferiority complex. The mere fact of making it to the US gives him or her a sense of equality to the
citizens. They are bold and very expressive.
Older African immigrants make it clear to the newer
arrivals that they need to be twice as resolute, hardworking and smart to
succeed in the US. “It is tough out here for us”, is what you are told. “Nothing
is handed to you on a platter. No room for excuses as a foreigner here.” And
this indoctrination prepares them for success.
And with the pressure
from your family back home, you have no choice but to better yourself, and make
that money, because there are mouths
to feed. So, failing is not an option. And again, this is another source of
resentment from African-Americans, who may view this attitude as being overly
ambitious. How dare an African immigrant come to America and reap where he or
she didn’t sow? African-American ancestors did the heavy lifting, and then
African immigrants come and are having it very easy.
Yes, the ancestors of African-Americans have done centuries of heavy lifting, making tremendous sacrifices, and in many instances paying the ultimate price, while fighting for equality and fairness for the black race. And I believe African immigrants are aware, and are very grateful for all the great sacrifices.
